Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and what would make her day more than a beautiful mother’s day table setting? We are so excited to have a special guest, the lovely Kristin from Table Decorate Celebrate, on DIY Decorator today. Kristin is the Queen of table decorating, and she has created this amazing table setting of you to create this Mother’s day. Here’s Kristen….
Mother’s Day is such a special time of year and is all about celebrating the beautiful and kind things our Mums do for us throughout the year. With this in mind, I like to spoil my Mum on her special day and a design a tablescape around things that I know my Mum will love.
My Mum and I both live in the bayside suburbs of Brisbane and we love all things coastal! For the foundation of this tablescape I chose to use the blue French Stripe table cloth from Pillow Talk. This tablecloth screams coastal with its classic navy and white stripes! To add a feminine touch , I teamed it with some pale pink round placemats which I bought from my local Kmart.
Having a white dinner set is a must have when table styling. To create my Mother’s Day place setting, I used my Maxwell & Williams White Basics dinner set which is a great all-rounder dinner set. I added some small palm leaves between the bread and butter plate and dinner plate to add another coastal layer to my table.
To complete the place setting, I added some photos of Mum and her children (or her only child in my case!). When it is a special day celebrating one person such as Mother’s Day or a birthday, I like to try and personalise my tablescape specific to that person. In this case, I used photos because what Mum doesn’t love photos of her children!
There are a couple of ways you could use your Mum photos for this tablescape. If there are several siblings in the family then print out a photo of each sibling posing with Mum and use them as a placecard.
The other option is print out photos of Mum at different times and special days throughout her life as a Mum. This is a sure fire way to bring back lots of memories and evoke conversation and laughter at your lunch or dinner table!
For this tablescape I printed the photos in black and white so that they don’t compete with overall scheme. I embellished them with some pink and white stripe ribbon from Spotlight and some cardboard, polaroid-look frames from Kmart.
To keep the coastal theme going in the centre of the table, I placed some palm leaves cut from the garden in three vases again from Kmart. I wound a white washed, driftwood garland around these three vases and then embellished them with several different things.
One of the favourite things my Mum and I love doing together is foraging on the beach so I added lots of white shells to this centrepiece. I also went foraging around my local neighbourhood (sorry neighbours!) for some gorgeous coastal pink flowers such as frangipanis and hibiscus. The last but not least and definitely very girly touch to this tablescape was adding some pearls to the centrepiece. I love the way these pearls added such a pretty element to this table. To save on cost I used some faux pearl necklaces I had in my cupboard but if you don’t have any of them you can buy strands of faux pearls from your local craft store.
I hope this provided some inspiration to get tablescaping for your Mum’s special day! Decorating the table for Mother’s Day does not need to be expensive. Put your thinking caps on and have a think about all the beautiful things your Mum loves and all the things that you love to do together and express that on your table.
She is a special woman and I can guarantee you she will love all the thought you have put into her special day! x
