Today we are visiting a sophisticated living room in Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula. This room belongs to Michelle, Derek and their four boys. They have created a special place in their home where they can relax and unwind.
Michelle started her living room makeover with a rug as her anchor piece in the room, and followed our advice on “How to choose the right size rug for your Living Room”.
The rug is from Harvey Norman and it really anchors the seating area in this room, especially as it is in contrast with the carpet.
The Wing back chair is my favourite piece in this living room. Wing back chairs are perfect for curling up and reading a book.
The chair has a grey knitted throw rug from Adairs draped over one side of the chair and the Atherton cushion from Provincial Home Living. The colours in the sofa and the throw work back with the tones in the rug and cushions.
A small posie of ranunculus add a pretty touch to the coffee table. Michelle has grouped together some pieces in a white West Elm tray.
The provincial style coffee table is from Early Settler. You can read all about “How to style a coffee table” to pick up some quick and simple tips.
The living room is made up of a linen chesterfield style setting. A three seater, two seater and an occassional chair. Michelle has used a white butler tray from Provincial Home Living and a natural seagrass basket from Freedom for storing things in.
The grey cushions are from Ikea. Michelle has also used the Ikea feather inserts in her cushions. I always use these inserts for my cushions. They just fit so well and are really affordable. You should go a size bigger than your cushion cover with the feather insert. This will give you a more plump but soft appearance.
The family photos add a personal touch to the living room. Even though the frames are all different sizes Michelle has grouped them together.
Mixing different shades of blue cushions and blue and white china works so well with the linen chesterfield sofas.
With a bit of planning you can create something special in your own home. Some decorating tips Michelle has used:
- Group family photos together.
- Use trays to group decorative items on your coffee table.
- Rugs make a great anchor for your living room space.
Thank you to Michelle and Derek for sharing your living room with us.
We know how much you all enjoy our room tours. We are currently looking for rooms to feature in Melbourne, so please get in touch if you have a room you would like us to share.
