When you go to the trouble and expense of buying beautiful fresh cut flowers, you want them to last as long as possible, but what’s the best way to do that? Well here are our top tips for keeping flowers fresher longer and a homemade recipe for flower food.
Have you ever wondered what’s in those flower food sachets you get when you buy some flowers? Pretty much 3 things – an ingredient to kill bacteria, yeast and fungus that grows in the water, an acid ingredient to help the water move up the flower stem more easily and a food ingredient to feed the flowers. You can easily make your own flower food, using simple household ingredients.
You Will Need:
1 litre of room temperature water
1 tablespoon apple cider or white vinegar (acid ingredient – you could also use lemon juice)
1 tablespoon sugar (food)
a dash (half teaspoon) household bleach (ingredient to kill bacteria)
Mix all the ingredients together in a jug, then pour the flower water into your vases.
Other Tips for Keeping Flowers Fresh:
- You may already know that you should make a fresh cut on the flower stems before putting them into the vase, but did you know you should make this cut while the stem is in water to stop air bubbles forming in the stem which interferes with the flowers ability to draw water.
- Use warm and lukewarm water as this is easier for the flowers to take up, but use cold water for bulb flowers, such as daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips.
- Change the water in the vase every 2-3 days if you really want to get some mileage out of your cut flowers.
- Keep the flowers out of direct sunlight, and other heat sources.
- Only fill your vase to about three-quarters of the way up and remove any foliage below the water line as this will increase the bacteria levels in the water.
