With summer nearly here, now is the perfect time to clean your outdoor rugs and freshen up your outdoor area. One of the benefits of outdoor rugs is that you can easily clean them yourself. Follow our simple tips to restore your outdoor rug to looking new again for summer.
How to Clean An Outdoor Rug
Lay the rug out in an area where you can hose it down.
Hose down the rug with water
Mix up the detergent – use 1/4 cup of mild laundry detergent in 1 gallon (3.8 litres) of lukewarm water (30C). Here’s my secret cleaning recipe – I use an oxygen bleach powder like Vanish Oxyaction.
Use a soft brush (a car washing brush is idealDIY Decorator Tip) to gently brush the rug and remove the stains. To save your back you can also use a long handled soft bristle brush. Pay particular attention to soiled areas.
Hose the rug again to remove all the dirt and detergent. Roll the rug up and stand it vertically for 15 minutes or so to drain all the water. Then lay the rug flat in a clean spot to dry thoroughly.
Once your rug is dry lay it out in it’s normal spot.
I was so pleased with how clean my rug came up and it looked like new again. Well at least for one day, then my dog Gus vomited all over it. I’m not kidding. At least the rug is easy to clean.
