The size rug you need will depend on:

  • the size of the room,
  • the seating arrangement you have
  • and whether your furniture is against the wall or in an open area

The Anchor Rug

The anchor rug is larger and really helps to define or anchor the seating area.  The rug is big enough to go partially underneath the seating but not all the way.  The front legs are on the rug but the back legs are not.  You may find that you can put the whole armchair on the rug, particularly if you have it at an angle.

This is a good rug size to use when the sofa is against the wall, as you don’t want the rug to go all the way to the skirting board – you want to leave a space of around 20-40 cm or 8-16″ between the rug and the wall.

The Extended Rug

The extended rug takes in the whole seating area and extends all the way under the furniture.  All the legs of a sofa or chairs are on the rug.  This type of rug is particularly useful for defining the seating area when the furniture is away from the walls in an open plan area.

In smaller rooms, the rug can take up nearly the whole room except for a border around the edge of the room.  This was the way rugs were traditionally used in place of wall to wall carpet.

How to choose the right size rug for a living room

Which is the Right Size Rug?

To determine the right size rug for you, look at your room.

  • What is your seating arrangement?  Where are the sofas, chairs and tables in your room?
  • Do you want the rug to just go under the coffee table or to extend either partially or fully under the furniture
  • Use newspaper or masking tape on the floor to outline your ideal rug size
  • Write down your minimum and maximum rug size that will fit in your space.  Now it’s time to go rug shopping armed with the knowledge that you will choose the right size rug.  All that’s left is to pick one you like.
