What to look out for when buying a doormat?
Here are some things to think about when choosing a mat:
Materials: Not all materials are appropriate for outdoor use. It is important to review the fabric content of the fabric and the construction. Most doormats, including those made of polyester and vinyl fibres, are easy to clean and durable. These mats are more resistant to stains and damage caused by the elements, such as wet weather and powerful UV rays. Some doormats are made of coir, which is a natural fibre that comes from coconut husks. This fibre is abrasive and can be used to remove dirt from shoes. However, it is more susceptible than other types of fibres to water damage and shedding.
Many doormats are backed with a “non-slip”, textured material. This helps them to stay in place. The backing material is usually made of natural rubber or synthetic rubber, with a textured pattern for extra grip and security.
Style: Associate Lifestyle Editor Alyssa Gautieri suggests finding a mat that “reflects your style at home, whether it’s a simple design, natural pattern or maximalist print.” Gautieri says, “Your outdoor space is more fun when you inject personality through your doormat.” She suggests changing your doormat out as the seasons change. “Personalize your doormat by adding your last name telling a joke, or showing off your favourite colors,” she says.
Dimensions: Doormats can be found in many sizes and shapes, but the standard size is 24″ x36″ as most doors are 36″ wide. It’s a good idea to pick a mat that is the same size as your door. This will ensure that you and your guests can wipe their feet easily. It’s best to choose a wider mat or use two mats placed side by side if you have sliding or double doors. Some mats measure 18″ by 30″. You can also choose an arched mat to add a little flair.
Care Doormats go through a lot and are exposed to dirt, debris, and mud. Regularly cleaning your mat will help to maintain its longevity and keep your indoor area clean. Before buying, be sure to read the instructions for care provided by the manufacturer. Some doormats are easily cleaned by sweeping or vacuuming. Most can be cleaned with a hose, and then treated for stains. Some options are machine washable and come with removable covers for easy cleaning.
