I have often admired espaliered grown plants. Today we are going to make our own DIY espalier frame for a Chinese Star Jasmine. My project is on the side of my chicken house. The girls will love it.
What you will need.
- Hammer and battery drill.
- Screws (make sure to use a length that will go through your timber frame and secure your timber on the wall).
- Wire (I have used galvanised wire .90mm).
- Tape measure.
- Spirit level.
- Timber for the frame.
Firstly we measured the wall to place the espalier frame on. Cut the timber to size and attached to the wall with screws.
Measure both the width and length of the timber frame where you will be placing each screw. The screw should hang out by 1cm to wrap the wire around. This measurement must be the same across the top and down the side as it will determine the size of your pattern.
You can do either a square or diamond shape pattern.
Starting from the corner attach your screws. Work your way around each screw with the wire from top to bottom, working across from one side to the other. We have run two wires for extra strength.
Once you have worked out your measurements and start to weave the wire around each screw in position it is quite easy. Don’t forget to run your wire around the edge of the frame too.
Plant your Jasmine. I have bought three Chinese Star Jasmine plants to place evenly across the wall.

This image is another example of an espaliered Chinese Star Jasmine, isn’t it beautiful. You can make your pattern any size. Don’t forget to water your plants in well and tie up each branch on the wire as it grows. Use garden ties from your local hardware store, they are an easy way to train your plants.
Don’t forget to show us your espalier project and tag us on Instagram or Facebook.
