Want to make a Christmas flower arrangement to impress your guests this Christmas? Well Coorparoo florist Megan Collins popped by my house recently to give her expert florist tips to creating a beautiful flower arrangement in a simple bowl vase.
Being a florist, Megan was able to source her flowers through suppliers, but you can easily find your flowers at the flower markets, flower stalls or the grocery stores. My kitchen bench looked and smelt amazing when she arrived. Here’s what she bought.
Megan made 2 arrangements while she was here. A Christmas one that used all the flowers, except the spray roses, and a simple rose arrangement using spray roses and gardenia foliage picked from my garden.
Preparing You Flowers
Before you start creating your flower arrangement, you need to prepare the flowers. This involves removing any flowers or foliage that will be below the top of the vase. If you are using roses, you can also remove the thorns from the stems.
Here’s a quick video to show you how Megan prepares her flower stems.

Making the Christmas Flower Arrangement
To make the flower arrangement look so good, Megan used a technique known as straussing. A strauss is basically a flower arrangement where the stems are all criss crossed at the one point and tied together. Megan shows and explains the technique in this video.

Tying the Flower Arrangement
The trick to tying the flower arrangement is to turn the flowers upside down.

Cutting the Flowers to Fit the Vase
Now that the flower arrangement is done and looks amazing, it’s time to trim the flowers and put them in the vase. Knowing how long or tall the flowers should be is one of the biggest problems people face.
Often, people buy flowers and put them in a vase and they are too tall for the vase. It look better to trim them to the right size. What size is that? Well the flowers and foliage should just touch the rim of the vase. Watch the video to see how Megan does it.

The Finished Arrangement
Once the arrangement was finished, Megan popped it into some simple glass bowl vases which are a perfect height for a table setting. Here’s the finished result.
I think the pinwheels add a splash of Christmas red to the arrangement. To make the flowers last longer, make my Flower Water recipe.
Here’s a sneak peek of how I used the flower arrangement for a Christmas table setting.
Rose Flower Bowl
Whilst Megan was at my house, she also make a rose arrangement to show how using the same technique but with different flowers can produce a different look.
I learnt so much about flowers in the short time Megan was at my home. Her expert knowledge is so valuable. Megan is an independent florist based in Coorparoo, Brisbane. You can see more of her beautiful flowers on instagram @2daisies_
