I recently received an email from a reader (yes Catherine – you) asking me for some advice on decorating her son’s room now that he is ready to move to a ‘big boy’ bed. Her question was “I was thinking of white again like his nursery for the furniture but thinking ahead will it look too sooky when he goes to school and should I be thinking of a timber look, a more big boy look that will carry him through the years.”
Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with white furniture. It’s a simple classic background that will let you make a statement with bed linen and accessories. So Catherine, I’ve put together a little collection to show you what I mean.
DIY Decorator Sourcebook
1. Blue Stars Patchwork cotton comforter from Little People’s Linen
2. Hudson Nate lampshade from Kate Lauren Designs
3. Personalised cushions from Kate Lauren Designs
4. Single Sleigh bed in white from Sirocco Home
5. Matt Single bed in white from Treehouse
6. Dalmation wall decal from Peoni Home
The classic white furniture will easily adapt to your son’s changing decor as he grows up. Red, white and navy is a very popular colour combination for boy’s rooms.
Another option would be to use a bedhead with an ensemble, such as this gorgeous chevron bedhead from Peoni Home
Kids grow up so fast so invest in quality neutral furniture and have fun with the bed linen and accessories.
From left to right, Toby’s Travels quilt cover, Beep Beep String lights, and Super Stripe bed linen all from Adairs Kids.
Good luck. We’d love to see a photo when you do his room. Use the hashtag #diydecorator on instagram.
