Hi everyone. Welcome back to DIY Decorator in 2017. I’m starting the year with a book review of A House By the Sea by Bunny Williams.
One of the things I love about summer holidays, is having the time to read some books. This Christmas, my family gave me a copy of A House By the Sea by Bunny Williams. Whilst we can’t all build our dream home on an island in the Caribbean complete with staff to cook our meals, there is still much to love about this book.
What’s the Book About
The book is about how interior designer Bunny Williams, and her antiques dealer husband, John Roselli built their dream holiday home in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Bunny talks us through the process of designing, building and then decorating the home.
Woven throughout the book are stories from guests who have had the privilege of staying in the home. They share their thoughts and experiences of the home.
What’s to Like About the Book
For starters, the photography by Francesco Lagnese is simply stunning. It helps that he had such a beautiful house and garden to photograph.
The architecture of the home is traditional and classic, with lots of the details I love such as high ceilings, columns, and 3 paned windows that slide open like doors.
The interior of the home is well planned and thought out. Bunny has a great eye for design, paying particular attention to furniture layout and artwork.
What are the Interior Design Takeaway’s From the Book
Plan, Plan, Plan
One of the biggest takeaways I got from this book was how thoroughly Bunny planned the house. She carefully sketched out floor plans for every room to plan the use of space and furniture layout. She also drew up elevations of walls in the rooms so she could identify where artwork should go and to get their scale and proportion right.
Being based in New York and building in the Caribbean has it’s challenges. One way Bunny overcame this was to take a full inventory of all the furniture pieces she had in storage or planned to buy for the house, accompanied by photographs and measurements.
Who’s the Book For
I would definitely recommend this book for:
- If you love classic architecture you’ll love this book.
- Anybody who loves the tropical island style
- Tropical garden lovers
- this is definitely a beautiful coffee table worthy book
