What is DIY Decorator?
Hello! Welcome to DIY Decorator
I’m Kylie. I’m a decor coach and interior designer.
I am passionate about classic style decorating. To me, your home has to feel good. It has to be “you”. A place where you can relax and unwind, entertain, or just go through everyday life.
So many people I meet just don’t know where to start or what to do….. so at DIY Decorator, you will find decorating how-to’s, diy and craft projects, and beautiful homewares, to help get you on your way.
I believe it is possible to create a beautiful home that you will love on any budget you just need some inspiration, and a little know-how.
A dream house isn’t created over night, it’s created one little project at a time.
Kylie’s Story
I was born in Melbourne and lived in Victorian and Edwardian terrace houses in the inner suburbs most of my life.
After a career in property and shopping centres, I landed a job as a homewares buyer and was completely converted from real estate to the world of homewares and interior decorating.
I trained as an interior designer in 1998 and established Little People’s Linen, a boutique children’s decor shop in 1999. I have also taught interior decorating as a community short-course through TAFE.
After returning from a two year stint in London with my husband’s work, I ventured into the world of blogging about interiors. After just blogging about “life in the ‘burbs”, I established DIY Decorator in October 2013 to help other people create a beautiful home for themselves regardless of their budget.
I now live in a 1930’s Queenslander home in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs, with my husband, two teenage children and a schnoodle called Gus.
Things You Should Know About Me
I’m not scared to get my hands dirty. I can paint, sew and even use a cordless drill. I have been known to sing “I am Woman Hear Me Roar” whilst using a power tool.
- I love having fresh flowers in my home. No – I’m not Martha Stewart (although sometimes I pretend to be). I buy my flowers from the markets or the grocery store, and I’m very lucky to have a husband who’s an executive manager by day and a rose growing ninja on the weekends.
- I love a bargain. Almost half of the furniture in my home has come from vintage/thrift stores, eBay, or was on sale. I love Hi-Lo decorating where you mix Kmart and IKEA finds with classic pieces that are more of an investment.
- I believe that your decorating style should truely reflect who you are and should be collected over time. I’m not the sort of girl who would go into a chain store and say “I’ll have the matching set please”.
My Home
Here’s a little peek into my Queenslander home. I often share a glimpses of my home here on the blog or on instagram @diydecorator
