On instagram the other day, a reader contacted me for any tips on stylish media cabinets. She has been searching for a white Hamptons style unit for her TV room for the last 8 months. So I said I was happy to help, and I’d put my tips up on DIY Decorator for everybody to read.

The first thing I like to do when I’m giving decorating advice is to understand exactly what the client has in mind. I knew she wanted white and Hamptons style so I collected images to show what that might mean.

To me, all of these images have the Hamptons look using white cabinetry, and classical style moulding and detail.

Personally I’m not a big fan of placing the TV over the fireplace, as it’s too high on the wall for optimal viewing, but it looks good. Most of the images I found featured built-in cabinets. Any good cabinet maker or interior designer should be able to draw up plans for built in cabinets to suit your space and needs.
These free standing media cabinets from Pottery Barn, create a similar look and feel to built in cabinetry. The added bonus is you have flexibility to move the TV around in the room. Freestanding units are available in low console tables and high bookcase units with a space for the TV.
Once I had established what constitutes a Hamptons style media cabinet, I then searched the furniture section of our directory to find some suitable products available to buy. Here are some suggestions:
Shopping Guide – 1. Davenport wall unit from Xavier Furniture | 2. Hampshire TV unit from Rustic Charm Interiors | 3. Treadwell TV unit from Rustic Charm Interiors | 4. Coventry large TV unit with hutch from 1825 Interiors. You could achieve a similar look to these units using the IKEA Hemnes & Liatorp ranges.
Shopping Guide 1. Clouds entertainment unit from Super AMart | 2. Florence base TV unit from 1828 Interiors | 3. Newport small TV unit from Interior Solutions Brisbane 4. Manto Entertainment Unit from Interiors Online | 5. Lyon media unit from Canalside Interiors | 6. Hamptons sideboard from French Chateau | 7. Parisian entertainment unit from Rococo Design | 8. Malval media unit from Rococo Design | 9. Vermont 4 door entertainment unit from Freedom Australia | 10. Newport large TV unit from Interior Solutions Brisbane
So option 1 is to have a cabinet custom made, and option 2 is to look at buying one of these ready made cabinets. Either way, make sure you consider the following:
- the location of the cabinet in the room – is it up against a wall or a window, or will you see the back of the unit from another room?
- the dimensions of your area
- the dimensions of your TV
- the best height for the TV (this depends on the size of the tv and how far away your seating is)
- do you want to stand the TV on the cabinet or mount it on the wall?
- what other media equipment needs to be housed in the unit?
- will you need open shelves or vented cupboards for speakers?
- what other storage do you require? for example, dvd’s, cd’s, books
- do you want space to display decorative objects?
- the location of TV arial and power points
I hope you found these tips and suggestions useful, and I look forward to seeing what you end up with. If you have a decorating problem that you’d like some tips with, please email us, or contact us on social media, and we’ll gladly help.
