Imagine if you could turn plain glass into a shiny mirror finish? Well you can, and it’s so easy. In literally minutes I transformed an old glass bowl into a pretty mirror bowl. Let me show you how.
Start with Plain Glass
I started with a plain glass bowl that somebody left at my house two years ago. Sorry – if you haven’t asked for it back, it’s mine now.
I washed and dried it, then I taped the outside of the bowl. I ran out of masking tape so I used electrical tape.
Spray the Glass with Mirror Spray
I bought Rust-oleum Mirror Effect spray from Bunnings (around $12.95). I laid a drop cloth outside, made sure I gave the can a good shake and then sprayed the inside of the glass bowl. Here’s a quick video

This is what the glass bowl looked like after one coat of mirror effect spray.
Tips – I gave the bowl 3-4 coats of spray paint. After the first coat I wore disposable gloves to stop the spray getting all over my hands. You need to spray the reverse side of the glass – the inside of the bowl has a duller finish to the outside of the bowl. I also gave the inside of the bowl a coat of clear spray just to protect the surface from scratches.
I removed the electrical tape and voila!
The Finished Mirror Bowl
And here’s what the finished bowl looks like.
I filled the bowl with some conifer cuttings from the garden, and some left over silver baubles I had.
Overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. This is not a sponsored post. I just saw the spray in Bunnings and thought I’d give it a try. Now I’m wondering what else I can transform. What glass item would you turn into mirror?
i have some lamp shades that i’d happily try out the mirror spray on; i tried the Rustoleum nickel finish spray and really don’t like the outcome. I’ll have a respray using the mirror finish to see if i like them any better. I’m fairly certain, i’ll end up selling the lamp bases at some point because i have my eye on some others!
Hi Suzi. I tried painting a non-glass surface with the mirror spray and it isn’t very shiny. You can get a bright chrome finish in White Knight spray cans and it’s bright and shiny.
